Where ever possible we will use a tripod to steady the camera shot but on occasion we need to go hand-held to follow spontaneous and live action. Inevitably hand-held shots are not as steady as tripod shots but they have an instant, fly-on-the-wall quality which can be highly appropriate for some productions.
Another option is to use a steadicam which is a counter-levered mount worn by a cameraman which balances a camera for a stable shot even when moving. You’ll see them being used along the touchlines in rugby internationals.
